Like Father Like Son

Gen. 26

 

I.  Issac Resettles  Vs. 1-5  (97 years since Abraham encountered Abimelech)

1.     The cause to resettle is once again a famine.  vs.1 

2.     Issac goes as far as Gerar and God tells him stay in the area and do not go down to Egypt.  vs.2

3.     Live in this land and I will;

A.    be with you and bless you,  vs.3

B.    give you these lands,  vs.3

C.    establish the oath which I swore to your father, vs.3

D.    multiply your descendants and they will have this land,  vs.4

E.    nations of the earth will be blessed thru your descendants.  vs.4

4.     Why;  because Abraham obeyed Me and fulfilled his duty to Me, and kept My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”  vs.5  (Abrahams worthiness, see Gen. 22:16)- By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son,

 

II.  Issac Makes Similar Mistakes   Vs. 6-11

1.     Issac, living in Gerar, tells the men in Gerar that Rebekah is my sister.  vs.6-7

2.     After being there a long time Abimelech sees something that is not right.  vs.8

F.    Rebekah unlike Sarah was not taken into the royal harem.

3.     Issac explains his fear and Abimelech commanded that no one touch them.  vs.9-11

 

III.  Prosperity and Patience  Vs. 12-25

1.     God blessed Issac and he becomes very wealthy in possessions and household.  vs.12-14

2.     The Philistines, becoming envious, were making life difficult for Issac by filling in the wells.  vs.15

3.     Issac moves to the Valley of Gerar per Abimelech request; you are too powerful for us”.  vs.16-17

4.     The arguments over wells continued so Issac goes up to Beersheba.  vs.18-23

5.     Here God appeared to Issac and reaffirms his promises, For the sake of My servant Abraham”. vs.24

6.     Issac builds an altar there, calls upon the name of the Lord, pitched his tent, and dug a well.  vs.25

7.     Abimelech fearing Issac, comes and they make a covenant with Issac noting You are now the blessed of the Lord”.  vs.26-33

8.     All is well now except for Esau, who is now 40, takes wife's from the Hittites causing grief for Issac and Rebekah.  vs.34

 

 

 

 

Life of Deception

Gen. 27

 

I.  Obedience to Their Parents   Vs. 1-17

1.     Issac was 60 at the time of the birth of his sons Esau and Jacob.  Gen.25:26b.  Issac loved Esau and Rebekah loved Jacob.  Gen.25:28.  A large amount of time passes between chapters 26 and 27.

2.     Issac is now 137 years old and calls for his son Esau with a request so he can bless him before he dies.  vs.1-4

3.     Rebekah was listening as Issac was speaking with Esau.  vs.5

4.     Rebekah seeks out Jacob and explains Issacs request of Esau and tells Jacob to listen to her.  vs.6-10

5.     Jacob does not say no but has doubts because the difference between him and his brother.  vs.11-13

6.     Rebekah reply’s that Your curse be on me”,  and gives him further instructions which he does.  vs.14-17

 

II.  The Deception  Vs. 18-30

1.     Jacob obeys his mother and goes to Issac.  vs.18

2.     Jacobs lies and deceptions:

A.    I am Esau your firstborn”.  vs.19  (lie)

B.    Because the Lord your God made it come to me”.  vs.20  (lie)

C.    Issac still with some doubt ask Jacob to come close so he could feel him.  vs.21-23  (deception)

D.    Are you really my son Esau”, and Jacob said, I am”.  vs.24  (lie)

E.    Issac still not 100% ask Jacob to kiss him and with that he smelled Jacobs / Esaus garments.  vs.26-27  (deception)

3.     Issac blesses Jacob after testing Jacob with sense of timing, touch, taste, and smell. 

4.     Issac having just finished blessing Jacob, Esau comes in just as Jacob had    left.  vs.30

 

III.  The Stolen Blessing  Vs. 31-46

1.     Esau obeyed his father while Jacob deceived him.  vs.31-32

2.     Issac blessed Jacob and now has to confirm to Esau that (Yes, and he shall be blessed”) it is an irreversible legal form.  vs.33

3.     Esau does receive a blessing from his father but Im not sure I would classify it as a blessing.  vs.38-40

4.     Esau is bitter and is holding a grudge against Jacob and wants to kill him. vs.41  (Issac lives for another 43 years)

5.     Rebekah is fearful for her son Jacob and sends him away to her brother Laban.  vs.42-45  (a few days turns out to be much longer, years)

6.     Rebekah uses Esaus wife’s, foreign wife’s, to deceive Issac into sending Jacob away.  vs.46
